Complete Guide to Installing and Typing Sinhala

For most of us, installing and typing Sinhala was a daunting task.
I found a combination of applications, gadgets supplied by,

  • ICTA Sri Lanka
  • Google
  • UCSC (University of Colombo Sri Lanka)

To do the trick.

Miss placed Sinhalese characters in a sentence are a thing of the past now.


Installing Sinhala Unicode

Visit: http://locallanguages.lk/OS_Support

scroll down and select the installation according to you operating system.

I recommend that W1nd0vvs XP users download the installation pack,

http://locallanguages.lk/files/SinhalaTamilKit_XP.exe

Complete the installation and restart the computer.

After restart you will have Sinhala Unicode installed on your computer.

Typing Sinhala Unicode

Best resource I could find for typing Sinhala, is the

Online Unicode Keyboard: http://www.ucsc.cmb.ac.lk/ltrl/services/keyboard/

The second resource is the iGoogle gadget for typing Sinhala

Help : Unclear too small Sinhala characters

Best posssible option for viewing such pages is to zoom the browser window.

You will be amazed with the quality of the text when you zoom in.

For Firefox uses, a very easy way to zoom-in to a page is,

  • While pressing Ctrl (Control Key of your keyboard), rotate the mouse wheel.

To reset to default zoom press,

  • Press Ctrl (Control Key of your keyboard) and 0 (Zero)

  1. GUide is only for Windows XP and only for Service Pack 2 :(

    May cause usp10.dll problem, especially for ignorant SP3 users.
